‘We lost everything,’ laments Honduran mother who travels with her two children in the caravan

GUAL FONDO, Guatemala.- Despite hunger and exhaustion, thousands of migrants from the caravan they refuse to abandon the dream of arriving in the United States, this is the case of a Honduran mother who, after losing everything, decides to make the hard journey.

“We are sad, heartbroken, hungry, tired from the journey, but I plan to endure everything in order to get to the United States,” he explains. Marta del Cid, 40 years old, originally from San Pedro Sula.

Like them, whole families travel in the caravan, many with children. Most only carry their few belongings and almost no money.

Living under a bridge

Marta regrets that she joined the caravan because she lost her belongings in the caravan two hurricanes who whipped Central America in November and who was living under a bridge.

“We lost everything, and in Honduras the government treats us like rubbish,” laments the woman, who is traveling with her two children, aged 24 and three. The clothes he wears are already dirty.

Like her, Carlos Valle, 34, travels driven by unemployment, left with relatives her three children aged four, eight and 11 in Comayagua (center) and does not lose faith in achieving the goal. “We are tired, but we will resist and I hope Guatemala will let us pass to continue the march to the United States,” he says.

Faced with their attempt to continue, the migrants were repelled with sticks and tear gas bombs by the military and police. Many migrants were injured in the crash, where the military used long sticks to strike and prevent them from crossing the barrier.

The thickness of the group has been reduced to about 4,000 people. The rest has dispersed. About 800 have been contained in a nearby village and more than 1,500 have returned voluntarily.
