It started around 9:30 p.m., according to downdetector.com, an application and website monitoring service.
Saturday at one in the morning, it looked like the problem had been solved.
“We are studying reports indicating that some people currently have to log back in to access their Facebook accounts,” the company said in a statement. “We believe this was due to a change in configuration and we are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”
The massive session was quickly tracked with user memes as well as some conspiracy theories.
In a stroke of irony (or genius, depending on your perspective), Facebook posted a follow-up note on the disruption on Twitter.
So Facebook knew it was a “configuration change.”
👏👏👏 to the engineers who solved the problem and patiently tried to explain the cause to us to no avail. https://t.co/AUARhCZ7W2
