Here’s a look at what’s in the GTA on New Year’s Eve and what will be open and closed on New Year’s Day 2021.
New Year’s Eve Events:
Nathan Phillips Square:
The annual celebration at the center will feature live music, a skating party and fireworks. The event for all ages runs from 9pm to midnight.

ROM:
Starting at 9 p.m., the Royal Ontario Museum will host its New Year’s Eve party. Attendees will have special access to the “Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches” exhibit and will be able to host live bands, DJs and a countdown to midnight.
Celebration Square:
The city of Mississauga is hosting a party in Celebration Square from 8 p.m. Highlights of the event are food trucks, live music performances and fireworks.
Garden Square:
Brampton hosts its New Year’s Eve party in Garden Square. The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will feature a musical performance by the JUNO Magic!
Traffic on New Year’s Eve
TTC
The TTC offers free subway, tram and bus travel, courtesy of Corby Spirit and Wine, from 7pm on December 31st to 7am on January 1st.
The last northbound subway trains are expected to leave Union Station around 3:30 am. The last trains south of line 1 leave at around 2:50 am
Some tram and bus services will run all night. See the TTC website for more information.
GO Transit
Go Transit will offer free service from 7pm on 31 December, in addition to additional night service. Here are all the details.
UP Express
The Union-Pearson Express offers free travel after 7 p.m.
What’s open on New Year’s Day:
• Tourist attractions, including AGO, Casa Loma, CN Tower, ROM and Toronto Zoo
• Some malls, including the CF Toronto Eaton Center, Square One and Vaughan Mills
• Many restaurants
• Cinemas
What is closed on New Year’s Day:
• Banks
• Government offices
• Most grocery stores
• LCBO and Beer Store locations
• GO Transit operates during holiday hours
• TTC operates on Sunday
