What’s new in the iPhone 13: redesigned packaging, amounts of RAM, etc.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro were officially unveiled yesterday, with the new A15 chip inside, camera updates and more. Go below as we gather some of the latest news, including details on packaging changes, battery percentage, and amount of RAM …

Changes in packaging

An interesting change with this year’s iPhone 13 line is that Apple has redesigned the packaging. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of marketing, says Apple was able to “redesign the packaging” to remove the plastic wrap on the outside. This change, by itself, should remove 600 metric tons of plastic, according to Apple.

The more specific information here isn’t clear, so we’ll have to wait and get on the iPhone 13 to learn more about how Apple redesigned the iPhone.

Also as a reminder, Apple last year stopped including a power brick in the box with iPhone purchases. So, in the case of the iPhone 13, you’ll find the iPhone itself next to a USB-C charging cable in Lightning. If you don’t have one yet, you’ll need to purchase a separate USB-C charging brick.

No battery percentage in status bar

Although the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro have a notch about 20% smaller in terms of width, Apple has yet to re-add the estimated battery percentage indicator to the status bar. Instead, it’s still hidden in the Control Center, so you’ll need to swipe down from the top right to access the battery percentage.

In fact, Apple has had room to add the battery percentage of Max models in previous years and chose not to. This means that the battery percentage is unlikely to return to the status bar, having probably been a conscious decision to remove it first.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro RAM

Apple does not announce amounts of RAM from the iPhone, but Xcode information does MacRumors reveals that the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 contain 4GB of RAM, while the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max contain 6GB of RAM. This is the same as the RAM in the iPhone 12 line last year.

As a reminder, pre-orders for the iPhone 13 will begin on Friday, September 17 at 5 a.m. PT / 8:00 ET. The first orders will then arrive to buyers on Friday 24 September.
