What’s the most impractical car you’ve ever driven?

It is usually advisable to buy a car that fits your life, not one that you have to rearrange to fit your life. Sometimes, though, things don’t work out that way. Sometimes your love for the car is so deep and so deep that you are willing to bother yourself and, occasionally, your family and friends for the relationship to work.

I can’t say that I personally have a great example of this in my fairly short car ownership history, although I will say that the Fiesta ST I currently drive is definitely the closest answer to that question. Yes, it’s a four-door hatchback, which at first seems pretty practical. At this point, though, I’ve done enough travel across the country and wholesale vertebrate shredding shops to know that a car that’s a bit too small and hard can be very uncomfortable at those key times when you need them to be anything but. At least it tends to get me out of designated driver roles because no one wants to get stuck in the back seat.

The answer is me to want having this question, however, is none other than the GR Yaris. I wouldn’t want anything more than an even smaller and less practical hatchback ruining my life, for the simple reason that it’s a special rally homologation. I would put up with all the shit if only Toyota would give me a chance.

So what absolutely impractical and inhospitable car did you try to live with, and how did you make this wrong relationship work?
