“Whiteout, Brutal Conditions” on I-70, Enclosures in the Colorado Mountains, Buttresses and East – CBS Denver

(CBS4) – Authorities are having trouble keeping Interstate 70 open in the foothills of Colorado during the severe snowstorm that is plaguing the state Sunday. On Sunday morning, officials announced that things were not going well on the eastern plains.

As of 1:45 a.m., I-70 had weather-related closures in the following areas:

– Silverthorne east to Georgetown
– From Golden to Floyd Hill (on the border of Clear Creek County and Jefferson County)
– Airpark Road from Aurora to Limon

Colorado State Patrol officials said in a tweet that the conditions in Floyd Hill were: “whitewashing the brutal conditions.”

Some out-of-state drivers have tried to get to Colorado ski resorts amid the snowstorm. A family in Orlando, Florida, told CBS4 that they veered off I-70 and got stuck in the snow.

“We go to Breckenridge to ski. The girls had to use the toilet. We couldn’t go up the hill with the two-wheel drive truck, so we backed off and he put it in the ditch, ”said one family member.

“What advice would you give other people if it was their first time driving in the snow?” asked Justin Adams of CBS4.

“If you rent a vehicle, make sure it’s four-wheel drive, not two-wheeled,” he replied laughing. “Other than that, hey, that’s what it’s about.”

The family was able to borrow a tow rope and get back on track. But they probably won’t forget their ski trip in March to Colorado soon.

According to meteorologist Ashton Altieri, a winter storm warning, winter storm warnings, and winter weather warnings are maintained for many areas of the state, with additional buildup expected in all areas.
