The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has urged countries to vaccinate their populations against coronavirus “as soon as possible”, and to pharmaceutical companies that increase the supply of vaccines and that this is “affordable and consistent.”
At the first press conference of the year, Tedros stressed that the vaccines against Covid-19 that are currently being administered are “very effective and safe” for populations at high risk of becoming ill. then become infected with the coronavirus.
“A year after the coronavirus was first reported, more than 30 countries have begun vaccinating their most vulnerable populations. The scientific community has set a new standard for vaccine development and now the international community must set a new standard for access to them, “said the WHO Director-General.
In this regard, Tedros stressed the need to vaccinate health professionals, recalling that they have been and are the people who are at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus. “Morally, economically, socially and for global security we must act to ensure that there is a fair deployment of the vaccine,” he postulated.
Finally, during the press conference, the Director of Health Emergencies of the WHO, Michael Ryan, stressed the importance of monitoring vaccines in the populations where it is administered.
