Who will be next in the cancellation culture cut block? They could be the Vancouver Canucks, because of their killer whale logo

Hey, everyone: there’s a new culprit for “cultural appropriation” in the city, whose neck could turn around by canceling the culture cut block – and it’s none other than the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League.

Because?

It turns out the team killer whale logo is a problem, at least according to a University of Manitoba professor of history / indigenous studies.

So how can killer whale images be so politically incorrect? Sean Carleton explained it all in a long Twitter thread Monday that began with the following publish:

Carleton said the killer whale that exploded from the top of the “c” on the Canucks’ logo resembles the art of the Coast Salish, a group of people from British Columbia.

“The Coast Salish-inspired images of the Orca logo were designed without indigenous consultation and have served as the team’s‘ brand ’since 1997,” Carleton added. “As a fan of Canucks and a historian of Indigenous-Colonial relations in BC, the killer whale logo is certainly a cultural appropriation.”

Last year, Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini said that while the team “could modify” the logo, the Canucks will keep it.

“I like the logo. It’s indigenous to the region. We’ll keep it,” he said.

Aquilini added that the logo “represents the current generation. … We have a whole new group of fans, who identify with this logo and like this logo.”

How did people react to Carleton’s thread?

As you can guess, not everyone saw things the way the teacher did:

  • “Just out of curiosity, do you have a house on the same stolen land?” a user he asked Carleton. “How much of the increase in home equity do you return to rightful owners?”
  • “Oh well KAREN,” commented another commenter he exclaimed. “They don’t take advantage of the art, they take advantage of the ice product. People don’t go to the games because, oh, that’s a nice logo! No. Honestly, it seems like you’re just trying to draw attention to yourself on behalf of of the natives. So horrible. “
  • Another user got to the point: “Dude, shut up the bastard. You’re a real idiot.”
