Marvel ‘Spiderman’ movies: Will they be able to watch on Netflix?
Watching all the movies and shows that make up Marvel Cinematic Universe became much easier with the Disney Plus debut, but it’s still hard to find a pretty remarkable character that everyone wants to see.
Neither Spiderman: Homecoming (2017) nor Spiderman: Far From Home (2019) are in Disney’s streaming app because Sony Pictures owns the distribution rights to both films. But a new partnership between Netflix and Sony could mean that Spiderman movies are finally easily accessible to streaming audiences.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal announced on April 8 will begin in 2022 and states that “future ‘Spiderman’ movies and other Marvel character-based films for which Sony has rights, including Morbius and Venom, “will land on Netflix.
While that doesn’t reveal the future of the broadcast of Tom Holland’s first two Spiderman films, WSJ said, “Getting access to Marvel titles was a key incentive for Netflix.”
However, for now, Starz still owns the rights to Sony Pictures movies until the rest of 2021 and is still the only place to see Spiderman: Far From Home.
Sony and Marvel Discord almost led to an MCU release for ‘Spidey’
In August 2019, Sony announced to the dismay of fans that the Spiderman saga would go on without the help of Marvel Studios. This meant, although Holland’s Peter Parker made appearances earlier in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the character would abruptly and indefinitely disappear from the MCU.
But the protest of fans and even Holland himself caused Marvel and Sony to return to the negotiating table and reach an agreement for the future of Spiderman.
After some delays, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Spiderman: No Way Home is scheduled for release on December 17, 2021. Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina are expected to reprise their roles as Electro and Doctor Octopus from previous Spiderman franchises. It is also rumored that two former Peter Parkers: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, make appearances, although Holland says it is not happening.
Spider-Man’s identity was revealed in ‘Far From Hom
While Spiderman: No Way Home will be the eighth film featuring the friendly neighbor Spiderman, it will be unique in a significant way: everyone now knows that Peter Parker is the one under the mask. Both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield managed to hide this secret from everyone except a select few characters during their respective careers as Parker, but Holland’s secret was shattered by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio.
In a half-credit scene in Spiderman: Away from Home, Mysterio posted manipulated images of his final duel with Parker, which framed him as the perpetrator of rampant murders. In his final moments, Mysterio also revealed that Peter Parker is actually Spiderman. This message was transmitted throughout New York City and presumably to the world.
While few heroes in the MCU have tried to hide his identity, Spiderman was one of the few who kept his face and name completely hidden from the public. For the first time in modern superhero film history, Parker will have to deal with the ramifications of the world, knowing exactly who he is.
