Wilson Camacho on Odebrecht case: Dantas Bezerra’s statements are unbeatable

The head of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca), Wilson Camacho, has assured that the statements of the Brazilian witness Mauricio Dantas Bezerra in the Odebrecht case they are “unbeatable” and possess “demolishing condition.”

“So far, Dantas has been given two cross-examinations and what we have seen in the courtroom is that Dantas has been unbeatable in response to questions from the defense and has maintained his integrity,” Camacho told the be addressed by the media during a brief hiatus.

During the interrogation by the defense of Víctor Díaz Rúa, Dantas admitted not recognizing in the documents submitted the bribery payments by Odebrecht to Díaz Rua or some of his companies.

Last Friday, the witness had stated that both Díaz Rua and those involved Àngel Rondón and Conrado Pittaluga had received bribes from the Brazilian construction company in order to obtain works contracts in the country.

Dantas Bezerra admitted that he was not present when the payments were made to the defendants, so his testimony is based on documents extracted from databases by the forensic firm GR Compliance.

When asked about the consistency of the payments made by the Brazilian construction company, Camacho noted that the witness had said that these are in the corroborating documents that were incorporated into his testimony.

“At the time of the closing allegation then the Public Ministry will make use of these corroborating documents to complete and fully explain the theory of the case (…) you can see the physical evidence that exists that these transfers have been made, ”he explained.

As for the erasures and scratches found in the GR Compliance company documents, the magistrate stated that “they cannot answer this issue at this time” because the court asked that “no details be revealed”.

Camacho reiterated that a case is not proven with just one witness, as the evidence that is incorporated and the statements of other witnesses must also be taken into account.
