Winter weather warning with 2-4 inches of snow forecast

DETROIT – We’ve been telling you all week to get ready for this and today is the last day to do some errands if you don’t like being outside in very cold weather.

Here is a summary of what will come to us:

Most of the daylight hours should be dry. Maybe some snow will approach south from Lenawee and Monroe counties in the afternoon, but again, the day should be mostly dry.

The bulk of the snow will fall between 7pm and 1am, and now it looks like we’ll see less of a change from rain or a mix – the best chance of seeing it is south of Detroit and east of US-23. As such, most of the moisture available to produce this storm will fall like snow, and now I expect there to be two to four inches of snow overall in southeast Michigan, which will fall into a pretty solid clip this evening. .

As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather warning from Thursday at four in the afternoon until Friday at four in the morning.

Announcements

The snow should finish by midnight and then we will be dry until Friday morning. Some lake-effect snow bands will spread across the state on Friday afternoon, and I think the best opportunity to see them will be north of 8 Mile.

Saturday looks dry and then there is a chance to have some soft snow on Saturday night and finish on the first Sunday morning. I don’t expect much accumulation of that.

It will get a little windy in the afternoon, but the actual wind doesn’t come until the Arctic front approaches Thursday night. The wind could gust between 30 and 40 mph from the south in front of the front, and then when the front crosses the area, the wind will move southwest with gusts of about 40 mph possible. This wind will continue until Friday.

Today there will be temperatures that will rise to half of 30 or 30 ºC (0 to 1 degree Celsius) this afternoon and in fact they will rise a little more to mid 30 (2 degrees Celsius) this evening. Once this Arctic front arrives, temperatures will start to crash and we will reach the mid-20s (-5 degrees Celsius) on Friday morning.

Announcements

Temperatures during the day on Friday will continue to drop and by the end of the afternoon we will be at the top of the teens (-8 degrees Celsius). The cold weather is strengthening this weekend, with highs among middle and high teens (-9 to -8 degrees Celsius), and the night drops to a minimum of single digits (-15 to -13 degrees Celsius).

The aforementioned wind and arctic air will make you feel much colder outside than the thermometer reads. Friday afternoon, wind chills will be around zero (-18 degrees Celsius).

Saturday’s cold will be zero to 5 above zero (-18 to -15 degrees Celsius).

Sunday’s cold will be between zero and 5 below zero (-18 to -21 degrees Celsius).

The snow that falls on Thursday night will be wet snow and (especially if there is rain on it) this snow will freeze into a solid piece of crude that will be very difficult to remove. If you have the chance, I suggest you go out as late as you can to clear the snow before the temperatures drop.

Announcements

An added bonus is that it will be much hotter (although windy) than if you wait until Friday or the weekend. Watch the free radar from the Local4Casters weather app … you can easily see where the back edge of the snow is. In fact, by clicking the “FutureCast” button, you’ll get the most up-to-date projection of the high-resolution computer model of the final hour of snow: our app will help you plan when you go out and pale.
