Winter Wonderland creates dangerous conditions for San Antonio drivers

SAINT ANTHONY – The city of Alamo was transformed on Monday into a winter wonderland after snow and ice covered the city’s roads and streets overnight.

With snow so rare in our area, some may enjoy the frost. Others who had to maneuver icy vehicles on the roads did not have as much fun.

“I just moved here like two months ago,” said Gabriela Yambo, who moved from North Carolina. “I grew up in Connecticut and we really get like snow every week.”

Yambo thought he had finally escaped from the snow. On Sunday night, however, road conditions intensified as 3.7 inches of snow fell, leaving many roads across San Antonio impassable.

Of the numerous shipwrecks, a KSAT crew saw an accumulation of multiple vehicles on an American 90 ramp, near Highway 151, on the west side, in which at least one semi-trailer was stabbed.

SEE: “We still ask people not to go out,” says the TxDOT manager

The Texas Department of Transportation closed local state roads Sunday evening as a precaution.

Announcements

“We currently have crews trying to head to the major highways in Bexar County,” said Laura Lopez, a spokeswoman for TxDOT.

Lopez said about 40 trucks were spraying brine and chattering rocks on the roads after Monday’s plowing.

This unusual winter storm proved to have a more substantial impact than people anticipated.

“I guess that hasn’t happened often, so I hope it doesn’t happen again,” Yambo said.

By mid-afternoon Monday, much of the snow and ice on the city’s streets had melted into water and even water, but with future road conditions still uncertain, TxDOT says it’s not sure when. they will reopen all state roads.

The city of San Antonio sent the following statement to KSAT:

“Public works are monitoring the roads after the rare winter conditions and the accumulation of snow. Teams assist SAPDs by placing barricades on bridges and maintenance steps in the city to prevent drivers from crossing dangerous roads.

Announcements

When the snow begins to melt, Public Works teams will continue to spread gravel material to help the vehicle’s traction. There are some malfunctioning traffic signs due to power outages and we urge residents to avoid driving, if possible. “

Bexar County officials announced that county facilities would be closed and court proceedings would be canceled on Tuesday.
