MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – More than 7,500 people have died from COVID-19 in Wisconsin, the Department of Health Services (DHS) reported Thursday. Four more deaths, including 3 in the past month, but just reported to the state, bring the death toll to 7,503. One death was in Winnebago County. The state averages 5 deaths a day over the past week. According to our calculations, the mortality rate has not changed, with 1.17% of fatalities.
Wisconsin has nearly 643,000 confirmed cases (642,969) of the COVID-19 virus since it first appeared in our state in February 2020. DHS reports that the state averages 1,223 new cases each day over the past 7 years. days. Of all the tests, including those tested several times, an average of 6.9% tested positive in the last 7 days.
State figures show that 113 more people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since Wednesday’s report. This is the third day in a row with hospitalizations of more than 100, excluding Monday, which accumulated throughout the weekend. Wisconsin has not had three consecutive three-day hospitalizations from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31. The state says 34,734 people have never been hospitalized with COVID-19 in Wisconsin, which is 5.4% of all cases. Since mid-October we were below 5.4%.
Taking into account discharges and deaths, the Wisconsin Hospital Association reports that 712 patients with COVID-19 are in hospitals across the state, 15 fewer than on Wednesday, with 222 of those patients in the ICU, which is one more than a day earlier. Hospitals in the Northeast Health Region reported 61 patients, with 19 in the ICU; that is, 1 less patient in the ICU and 2 fewer patients in general. Fox Valley hospitals have 54 COVID-19 patients, including 12 in the ICU; that’s 3 more in the ICU and 1 more patient overall than on wednesday.
Thursday before, the DHS went public with a website making parallel comparisons of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths for fully vaccinated individuals and the rest of the population. (Read more details in our separate report on new comparisons.)
The data show that in July, as the highly contagious delta variant became the dominant strain of COVID-19, people who were not fully vaccinated were three times more likely to test positive for the virus, 3.7 times more likely. probably to enter and 10 times more likely to die.
While there are advanced cases, DHS-appointed secretary Karen Timberlake says, “COVID-19 vaccines continue to do their job by stopping the spread of many new infections and preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death.”

DHS reported Thursday that 50.4% of the state’s population has completed its series of vaccinations, either a dose of Johnson & Johnson or two doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. That is, 2,932,137 people, out of 53.6% of the population starting at least the vaccination process, or 3,122,465 people.
These percentages include the Wisconsin population that is not eligible for the vaccine: children under 12 years of age. The state says 64.5% of Wisconsin adults have had at least one vaccine, including 60.9% of adults who have been completely vaccinated.
DHS says exactly 50 percent of residents in the Fox Valley health region, eight counties, received at least one dose of vaccine. The region includes the counties of Calumet, Green Lake, Menominee, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca, Waushara and Winnebago. State figures show that 47.1% of the combined populations of these counties completed their vaccine series.
DHS reported Wednesday that 12 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties have a very high level of virus activity, compared to 4 counties a week earlier. The other 60 counties are said to have a high level of activity. There are no counties where the spread of the virus is low or moderate. You can track the level of activity in Wisconsin counties over the past few weeks in the table below.

* The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Wisconsin Hospital Association do not post updates on weekends. The Michigan Department of Health only updates information on Tuesdays and Fridays.
** Cases and deaths come from state COVID-19 reports, which may differ from local health department numbers. Wisconsin DHS reports cases from all health departments within a county, including tribal, municipal, and county health departments; county websites may not be. In addition, public health departments update their data at various times, while DHS freezes the numbers it receives every day at the same time to prepare the afternoon report.
