Aurora Medical Center first reported the broken doses on Saturday and said it had been accidentally abandoned overnight by an employee at its Grafton facility.
In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, Aurora said the employee involved “has acknowledged today that he intentionally removed the vaccine from the refrigerator.”
Aurora’s statement said they had fired the employee and referred the matter to the authorities for further investigation. His statement said nothing about a possible reason for the action and health system officials did not immediately respond to messages seeking more information.
“We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions lead to a delay of more than 500 people receiving the vaccine,” the statement said.
Aurora declined to provide additional information, but said they would provide more details Thursday.
