MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – Coronavirus spread is “very high” in 34 counties according to COVID-19 tests over the past two weeks, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Wednesday. That happened in 12 counties a week ago. Virus activity is “high” in the other 38 counties; there are no counties where virus activity is moderate or low. The counties in the WBAY viewing area where DHS reports that virus activity is very high are: Brown, Calumet, Dodge, Forest, Green Lake, Kewaunee, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Outagamie, Shawano, and Winnebago.
The activity level is based on the number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents (the “load”) and the change in the percentage of positive tests (the “trajectory”) over the past two weeks. The state currently has a burden of 373 cases per 100,000 Wisconsinites. Counties in the WBAY display area with very high activity have loads above the state average, ranging from 386.2 cases per 100,000 in Winnebago County to 639 cases per 100,000 in Menominee County. See the DHS interactive map of counties and their case loads.
A month ago, the state averaged 310 cases a day. Wisconsin makes an average of 1,417 new cases diagnosed each day over the past week. The state says 1,710 tests came back positive in the last 24 hours. DHS says an average of 7.4% of tests over the past 7 days came back positive. The positivity rate has remained relatively stable this month, between 7.2% and 7.6%.
Since February 5, 2020, more than 650,000 people in Wisconsin have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 (651,341), the equivalent of 11.2% of the population.
Nine more deaths were added to the COVID-19 toll in the state, reaching 7,555. No deaths were reported in northeastern Wisconsin. The state says eight of the 9 deaths occurred in the last month, but the weekly average drops to 7 deaths a day after the rotating average rose to 8 yesterday.
State figures show that 127 more people were hospitalized in the last 24 hours. He Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) reported 802 COVID-19 patients on Wednesday, including 252 in intensive care. There are eight more patients in the ICU but two fewer patients overall across the state. These are the patients with the most COVID-19 in the ICU since 23 December.
The WHA says hospitals in the Northeast Health Region are treating 65 patients, with 24 in the ICU; these are 3 more patients overall, but the same number in ICU beds compared to Tuesday. The 13 hospitals in the Fox Valley region treat 60 patients, 2 fewer than the day before, with 16 of them in the ICU, an increase of 6.
Vaccines
The percentages of Wisconsin people who started and finished their series of vaccines each increased one-tenth of last day. DHS reports that 50.9% of the state’s population has completed their vaccination series, up from 54.1% of the population who have had at least one dose. About 6,400 more people have been vaccinated since the last report. At this rate, Wisconsin could have more than 3 million residents vaccinated at this time next week. There are already 3.15 million Wisconsinites who received at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Looking ahead to the school year, we have seen an increase in the percentage of vaccines among children eligible for the vaccine. The 12-15 age group experienced a 0.4 percentage point jump from Tuesday. 16- and 17-year-olds who completed their vaccine series increased three-tenths of a percentage point, as their age group continues to reach young adults in the percentage of vaccinated.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says it will soon update its website with case-by-case and death views for COVID-19 by school district. Like the current one case maps i vaccines, the data would cover the entire population within the boundaries of a district, would not be specific to schools.

* The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Wisconsin Hospital Association do not post updates on weekends. Update: The Michigan Department of Health updates the information on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
** Cases and deaths come from state COVID-19 reports, which may differ from local health department numbers. Wisconsin DHS reports cases from all health departments within a county, including tribal, municipal, and county health departments; county websites may not be. In addition, public health departments update their data at various times, while DHS freezes the numbers it receives every day at the same time to prepare the afternoon report.
