“Without degradation, sprint races are very boring”

Checo Pérez applauds the desire to improve the show for the fan, but does not believe that sprint qualifications are the solution

No positions won during the sprint classification for the Italian Grand Prix, Mexican Sergio Checo Pérez once again expressed his dislike for the format he seeks to implement Formula 1 during each Grand Prix.

Checo Pérez could not improve his position, in a 100-kilometer race at the Monza Circuit and in the face of this he pointed out as “very boring” what he experienced this Saturday as part of the 14th date of the season, but only the second with this qualifying model, as the tires do not suffer degradation and before the short distance returns complicated to overtake due to the train that gets to form with the performances using the DRS.

“Nothing happens in that, and I don’t see the benefit of having the speed race,” replied to Luke Smith of Motoring.

Checo Pérez went further and added that what was experienced has no benefit for competitors.

“I imagine it’s also boring for the fans, boring for the riders. To be honest, it doesn’t contribute anything,” he said.

In spite of what has been said, the tapatío considered that the best opinion will have the fans to see more action over the weekend.

“But it’s obviously made to improve the show, and we’ll see if fans are happy with that,” he commented.

The Mexican outsider needed to have degradation to make this format more attractive and considered that the choice of tracks could also hamper the development of this qualification format. “To achieve that you have to have some kind of degradation. I think they probably also got the tracks wrong. But I don’t know where it can be a good place to try it,” the Red Bull driver said.

Finally, mention that fans are looking for more excitement instead of seeing more time on the track at performances. “The problem is it’s too short and no degradation occurs. Fans will like a little more advancement in the race. It’s hard to achieve anything with the current rules.”

F1 will premiere in 2022 a new generation event from which greater emotions are expected on the track. Current cars need about two seconds of distance to run at full throttle, so overtaking becomes complicated. By 2022 it should shorten that distance and leave more track fights with overtakes included

The race can be enjoyed live and exclusively for Star Plus.
