Woman arrested after elderly man and teenager shot dead in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police say a 32-year-old woman is in custody after a shooting Tuesday morning that injured a teenager and an elderly man.

The suspect has been identified as Gwendlyn Whitfield-Dorsey, of Fort Lauderdale, and will face two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to police.

Detectives say they believe it was a domestic incident, although they are still investigating and have not revealed their relationship with the two injured people.

Sergeant. DeAnna Greenlaw said in an email to Local 10 News that officers responded to a shooting just before 8:30 a.m. at block 2900 southwest of 13th Court. While they were at the scene, they heard gunshots in the immediate area and ran to investigate.

According to Greenlaw, officers found an armed woman in the front yard of a house and ordered her to drop the weapon she had.

“Later, the agents determined that the woman was responsible for disarming the suspect during the altercation. The suspect, a different adult woman, was identified and detained without further incident, “FLPD said in a press release.

Greenlaw confirmed that a teenager and an elderly man were injured during the shooting and were taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

He said the teen was in critical but stable condition, while the elderly man suffered injuries that did not endanger his life.

“Detectives will be in the area gathering details of what happened exactly before the arrival of our officers,” Greenlaw said.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

“It is unusual in this area. Very quiet area, “said Joe Smariga, who lives in the area.

At the moment, the reason for the shooting is still unclear.

“We are very grateful to be able to end this without anyone getting hurt,” said Acting Deputy Chief Frank Sousa.
