Wonder Woman 1984 increases HBO Max activations by 17.7 million, as hybrid streaming and theatrical release pay off
It was the highest-grossing theatrical premiere of the pandemic after its debut on Christmas Day.
And it turns out that the decision of Warner Bros. released Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max’s WarnerMedia subscription streaming service at the same time as it hit theaters.
On Wednesday, parent company AT&T revealed that as a result, 17.7 million active users were added to HBO Max in late December.

Huge success: The 1984 release of Wonder Woman simultaneously on HBO Max and theaters on Christmas Day boosted WarnerMedia’s subscription streaming app activations
That number was double what he had at the end of September.
AT&T CEO John Stankey shared news of the success during a fourth-quarter profit call.
“The 1984 release of Wonder Woman helped our domestic subscribers to HBO Max and HBO more than 41 million, two years faster than our initial forecast,” Stankey said, THR.com reported.
Just two days after the film’s release, Warner Bros. announced that it would be fast: she was following a third film in the franchise, with Gadot resuming her role as Diana Prince and Patty Jenkins returning as a writer and director.

The combined release of films in cinemas and on broadcast is likely to continue to increase activation.
“Activations” counts the number of people who download (activate) the HBO Max application.
THR.com reports that the company expects to reach 50 to 55 million HBO Max customers in the United States by 2025.
WarnerMedia also plans to release an ad version of HBO Max during the second quarter of the year and begin rolling out the international broadcast service.

More to come: just two days after the film’s release, Warner Bros. announced that it would be fast, following a third Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins.
