Yadier Molina extends his contract for another year in the Major Leagues

Don’t hang the spikes yet!

Yadier Molina, 39, has today agreed a one-season extension with the St. Louis Cardinals, The Athletics media reported.

The extension of “The Martian,” as it is called, is $ 10 million, detailed The Athletics.

The receiving Puerto Rican star will go to 2022 for his nineteenth season in the Major Leagues, all with the San Luis Cardinals, with whom he made his debut in 2004.

The extension between Molina and the Cardinals was a rumor that has been circulating since last week.

The player who has shown good health at the age of 39 had said in July in Puerto Rico that he was ready to play one more season in the Major Leagues. His agent, Puerto Rican Melvin Román, said at the time that he had already begun approaches to the organization for these purposes.

Molina was a free agent in the preseason that preceded the current regular season. After hearing offers, Molina and the Cardinals agreed in February 2021 to maintain the relationship for one season. It was the first receiver experience in free agency.

The doradeño is the face of the franchise and a two-time champion with the team in World Series. He is a 10 times All Star and has won the Golden Glove nine times.

Excluding last night’s action, Molina has played 2,119 games in his career. He bats .280 with 168 homers and 983 RBIs.
