Yankees’ Gleyber Torres makes another mistake after moving on to the second

BALTIMORE: Maybe shortstop isn’t Gleyber Torres ’problem.

Torres ’struggles on the field continued Tuesday night at second base, when he stormed a possible double-play ball at the end of the sixth inning of a 7-2 victory over the Orioles.

He mishandled a routine pilot from Ramon Urias and still had a chance to get Austin Hays in second place, but his throw to Gio Urshela was inaccurate and Baltimore had runners in first and second and no one outside.

In spite of everything, Michael King managed to get Pedro Severino to score a strong goal against Torres, who got the strength in the second and converted the double play.

He was sacked to replace Tyler Wade defensively at the end of the eighth, with Wade at the helm, Urshela at the third and DJ LeMahieu at the second.

“There were only a few things I decided to get out of there tonight,” Aaron Boone said of the final change. “It was good to see him bounce off the custom double play and on the next play make a good play with a bullet.”

Before the match, Torres said he was open to the move Boone announced Monday, that Torres would go from short to second, with DJ LeMahieu from second to third and Urshela getting time.

Torres said he is “ready to do whatever the team needs” for the rest of 2021 and move on.

“The way I played the first two years of my career, playing second, I did two All-Star Games,” Torres said. “If I need to return next season, I will be available. If not, I will stay in second place and do my thing like the last two years ”.

This is what the Yankees are trying to recapture, let alone as the lowest defender and below-average hitter he has been in each of the last two seasons.

Torres said he was not upset by the move.

“It’s all for the team,” Torres said. “I make too many mistakes [at short]. Where we are right now [in the standings], we cannot make mistakes. I feel good for the move to the second. I want to be part of the team and I will try to play better. “
