Zynga acquires Echtra Games | GamesIndustry.biz

Zynga announced today that it has acquired Torchlight 3 developer Echtra Games.

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Founded in 2016, San Francisco-based Echtra has shipped just one game so far, last year’s Torchlight 3.

However, Zynga’s statement made clear the company’s interest reinforced by the pedigree of developers like Echtra founder Max Schaefer, who has worked on the first two Diablo games and the three Torchlight titles.

“Max and his team at Echtra Games are responsible for some of the most legendary gaming properties ever created, and are experts in the action role-playing genre and cross-platform development,” said Frank Gibeau , CEO of Zynga.

He added: “This acquisition will be key to growing our iconic licenses and brands from mobile to PCs and consoles, while helping to further expand Zynga’s total addressable market.”

For starters, Echtra will be collaborating with Zynga’s studio, NaturalMotion, on “a new unannounced role-playing game for cross-platform gaming.”

A Zynga representative said so GamesIndustry.biz there would be no redundancies associated with the acquisition.

Said Zynga Publishing President Bernard Kim GamesIndustry.biz last month, the company planned to continue its acquisition streak after finding success in recent years by adding developers such as Gram Games, Small Giant, Peak Games and Rollic.

“We remain aggressive and curious to buy more gaming studios and tech companies that we believe can be added to Zynga,” Kim said.
