McGlashan was 33 years old.
No cause of death or other information was given and his death is currently being investigated.
Discovery, the network of its series, released a statement on CNN.
“Our deepest sympathy is directed to Nick’s loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement said. “Nick came from a long line of crabs and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a keen sense of humor even in the toughest conditions. Everyone who knew him will miss him deeply.”
The show chronicles the lives of crews working on fishing boats in the Bering Sea.
Born in Alaska to a veteran commercial fisherman, McGlashan began working on a boat when he was 13 years old.
“It was named after his great uncle Nick McGlashan, who worked on the first ship rumored to be a pioneer in the American crab industry, the F / V Deep Sea, built in 1947,” says the biography . “Two of Nick’s aunts were also crabs; one was lost at sea when the ship sank in 1986.”
McGlashan worked as a cover chief on “Deadliest Catch” and has appeared on the series since 2013.
McGlashan wrote that he had been abusing alcohol, heroin and methamphetamine, overdosing three times before entering treatment in September 2016 and staying sober.
“My life went from the Bay of Bering Sea to the addict in every way. It hid from me that passion I had for life,” he wrote, “They took away my ability to live. I was at war. with my addiction and it was winning ”.
McGlashan was kicked off the boat for a while during season 13 to deal with his addiction.
“Even though he has had his ups and downs, Nick has fought tirelessly to stay sober and adopt a new sober lifestyle and is now so committed to his recovery that he inspires others,” according to his biography of Discovery Go.
