But a simple family visit to cut her hair came to life.
Bruno hopes that his family’s grief will serve to remind him how easy it can be to contract Covid-19, no matter how safe it is.
Precautions are passed
In late November, Bruno’s mother, Carol Bruno, came to her apartment with her sister so that her sister could cut her hair. Prior to the visit, her sister, who works in a salon, had taken a Covid-19 test which had been negative. He had also been quarantined for three to four days, a signal the family took to signify that it was safe to be around him.
His mother, on the other hand, had not come out much during the pandemic.
Throughout the visit, which lasted about 40 minutes, the Brunos wore masks and avoided hugs, Bruno explained. They also made sure her mother sat next to the windows they had opened as an extra precaution.
One day after the visit, Bruno’s sister began to show symptoms of Covid-19. The mother and son began to feel unwell soon after.
A visit becomes a tragedy
Carol Bruno, the mother, was admitted to the hospital on Thanksgiving Day, but was discharged that week as her condition improved. Two days later, he returned to the hospital where he was fitted with a ventilator.
Then her husband became ill.
Mike Bruno did not even accompany his wife and daughter to see his son, but he began to experience symptoms and was admitted to a hospital about two weeks after Thanksgiving, according to Bruno.
A day after her husband put on a fan, Carol died. Nine days later, two days before Christmas, Mike followed him.
All that was taken was a simple choice after months of caution, an option they believed was safe.
“If I had made that sacrifice and, you know, I wouldn’t have spent, you know, 30-40 minutes with my mom, they would still be here,” Bruno said.
