Born in Philadelphia, Ramsey’s entertainment career began on stage. He co-starred in Broadway shows, including productions of “Eubie!” and “Grind,” and toured the nation on the musical “Hello Dolly.”
Ramsey began his career in television with a guest role in the hit series “The Jeffersons,” and was a regular on “Cos,” Bill Cosby’s cartoon comedy series.
His best known role was in the 1984 film “Police Academy” as Officer Hooks, whose behavior was gentle and marked by memorable explosions. Ramsey starred in five additional “Police Academy” films during the 1980s.
He began acting as a voice on the cartoon series “The Addams Family” in the early 1990s, which aired for two seasons.
Ramsey was deeply committed to AIDS awareness and lent her voice to charitable causes, performing at “Divas Simply Singing,” an annual fundraising event.
Later in his television and film career, he had appearances on the adult swimming programs “Robot Chicken” and “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”
In 2015 he reunited with “Policy Academy” stars Steve Guttenberg and Michael Winslow in Syfy’s camp film “Lavalantula” and its sequel “2 Lava 2 Lantula!” next year. Her last acting role was in the 2018 independent film “When I Sing”.
His three brothers survive him.
