By now we know that the new year “detoxification” and “recovery” does not detox or restore anything. Depending on what you choose, they are too unsustainable diets or pure pseudoscience—Often a mixture of both. And yet they still appeal.
A “detox” in 2021 can mean a week of smoothies and juices, often guided by a guru who makes great promises about how amazing you’ll feel after spending a week drinking what you’ve bought them. Or it can be a challenge to eliminate certain foods from your diet, for example, without sugar. Whatever the mechanics, these are restrictive diets called self-care.
So let’s look at the reasons why people continue to restart their diet and clean up smoothies. Your marketing (even if it doesn’t look like marketing) definitely marks some boxes for the things we want in our lives: a sense of control, for example, or an antidote to the exhaustion of the holiday season. But there are ways to work these goals without starving yourself.
If you want more energy
Increased “energy” is often proposed as an effect of detox diets, and it is true that some people experience a feeling of greater concentration when they have not eaten for a long time. (People who practice intermittent fasting like to talk about it.) But it is a temporary state, if it occurs, and goes hand in hand with less pleasant mental states. People who complete a detox or rehab often say they feel great, but then, on the next breath, they will say things like “it was really hard, but I had it.”

For a more realistic way to get more energy, look at what can cause you fatigue. A medical professional should check for extreme fatigue, but “low energy” can often be corrected with one of the following:
- Sleep more and sleep better. Give yourself an hour to go to bed earlier, a constant wake-up time and practice good sleep hygiene, as if there are no screens or alcohol before going to bed.
- Make sure you eat enough. If you are on a constant diet or if the foods you eat do not form a well-balanced diet, eating better (more protein, more vegetables) can help you perceive energy levels.
- Check your mental health. Depression, anxiety, and other conditions can cause what appears to be a lack of energy. Have you been under a lot of stress lately? It must finally to Find a Therapist |?
If you feel dirty or guilty about what you have eaten lately
All December celebrations often leave us around January ready to clean up our diets and habits. If you’ve been drinking a lot, reducing can seem pretty appealing; and if you’ve been eating a lot of holiday treats, you’re likely to like a minimalist diet the same way.
But the truth is that some indulgences are worth a few meals it’s not a big deal in the long run. You don’t have to turn the pendulum in the other direction by cutting whole groups of food. Instead, try one of these:
- He has just returned to normal. Christmas cookies are gone (or you can feed them to your dog, freeze them for later, whatever you want). You don’t have to eat anything you don’t want.
- Find a sustainable way to eat better. What is one small change you can make to improve your diet? Maybe make sure you get an extra serving of vegetables at each meal or find some recipes you like to cook.
If you want to be better hydrated
It is true that you will be hydrated enough if you drink smoothies, juices, teas and lemon water throughout the day. Your body works better when it is well hydrated than when it is dehydrated, it is true. (Most of us you probably already have a lot of water, but a little more won’t hurt.)
The coolest thing is that you can drink more water or get more fluids in any way you want.without deprive yourself of food. Just add the liquids.
- Drink more water. That’s all, that’s the trick.
- Moisturize the skin. Do you know how people say your skin looks amazing when you’re well hydrated? A moisturizer also achieves this and does an even better job getting moisture into the outer layers of the skin.
If you like the idea of someone else making the decisions
Already made detox kits are popular, in part, because each week you have a box with everything you need. Letting someone else make their decisions and do their shopping is certainly a lot of mental work that gets out of the plate.
But you can also do this with real food.
- Learn how to plan and prepare your meals. Yes, it’s more work one day a week, but then you can take your meals out of the fridge all week without thinking about it. If you live with a partner or roommate, you can even change jobs every week.
- Order a food delivery service. Home Chef, Trifecta, i Finished, to name a few, we’ll send you a week of real food for less than the cost of many froufrou detoxes.
If you desperately want to be thin
It’s unfortunate that many people who say a detox is just to “feel better” still take pictures sooner or later, or notice their weight on the scales. If you are hoping to lose weight during a short-term diet recovery, it is possible. But it will go against it.
Rapid weight loss, driven by a large caloric deficit, is not just fat loss. Some part is muscle loss, which affects your health. And a good portion, especially on a low-carb diet, is usually water weight. The amount of water we keep in our body fluctuates every day and is determined in part by the glycogen (stored carbohydrates) that is in the muscles and liver. If you eat low in carbohydrates, you will stop glycogen and therefore you will be left with a few pounds of water; but as soon as you have one or two high carb meals, it will be back right away.
Even if there is some excitement for short-term weight loss, it is more than offset (for most people) by immediate recovery. So a detox doesn’t really help you. Better try one:
- Look for a diet that allows for slow and steady weight loss. There is no “better” diet for this, but you can choose one of the many food patterns that will allow you to eat a little less calories than you burn. If you have health problems, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian about the best way to treat them through diet.
- Or just not. There is no law that says you need to lose weight only for January, or really for any reason.
If you just want a ritual to give you a sense of control
Often, the most worthy part of Instagram of a detox is taking a glass of juice or smoothie or lemon water through a quiet morning window. Don’t you see it and want to be there, at that moment, enjoying a little self-healing ritual?
Well, just like hydration, this can be done without depriving yourself of food simultaneously.
- Choose a morning routine that makes sense to you. We have examples: here i here i here, for beginners.
- Build a ritual that does not focus on food. Maybe you can take it on diary, meditating, or another activity that is meaningful to you.
If all your friends do
Honestly, I think sometimes we do a self-improvement project not out of an inner desire, but because our favorite friends or celebrities do it. I totally admit that I have fallen into this trap and I am not even convinced that it is a trap. I’ve done things under pressure from my peers that I might not have tried otherwise; sometimes I’m glad to do it, and other times I’ve learned the hard way that something isn’t for me.
Again, you may find community without participating in the specific act of restricting your diet. Try an exercise-based challenge or look for an online community that focuses on a hobby you already enjoy or want to learn.
The bottom line is that replacing foods with smoothies isn’t the only way, or even the best way, to get in touch with your body and your mental health. In fact, it can be a pretty terrible way. So find out what you really you want and take smart steps to get the experience you’re really looking for.
