(Reuters) – Tesla Inc. vehicle registrations in the U.S. state of California rose nearly 63 percent in the fourth quarter compared to last year, largely due to the success of the Model Y of the company, according to data from Cross-Sell, a research company that collects title and registration data.

The automaker reported 2020 vehicle deliveries of what was expected earlier this month, driven by a steady increase in electric vehicle adoption, though it nearly lost its ambitious half-million target. year-round deliveries for a year of punishment for the global auto industry. .

The report released Wednesday showed California registrations, a major problem for the electric vehicle maker and its largest U.S. market, which recovered from a third-quarter low of about 16,200 vehicles to about 22,117 vehicles during the three months ending in December.

At around 11,417, registrations in the state of Tesla’s Model Y compact crossover utility vehicle surpassed those of the Model 3. California registrations for the Tesla Model 3 mass market sedan fell 34% annually to 7,044 .

Total fourth-quarter vehicle registrations in the 23 states, where data were collected, stood at 44,749, with Model Y accounting for nearly half of registrations.

Enrollment figures may not accurately reflect the number of vehicles delivered during the quarter, as registrations in the United States typically take about 30 days from the time of sale.

Tesla, whose shares rose more than 700% in 2020, is expected to report fourth-quarter results after the market closed on January 27th.
