The hit “Bridgerton” show is officially the most watched original Netflix series in the company’s history.
The show, based on a book of the same name by Julia Quinn, surpassed even the broadcast service’s own rosy projections in its first season by getting 82 million views, Deadline reported.
Bridgerton portrays the life of the upper class in Regency England, giving a subversive view of the period with colorblind casting and a story that focuses heavily on the lives of women.
The series was released on Netflix on December 25 and was described by GQ Magazine as a combination of “Gossip Girl” and “Downton Abbey.”
“I think the show really offers an amazing getaway for the audience at a time when that’s exactly what’s needed,” director Chris Van Dusen said.
“‘ Bridgerton ’is this lavish Regency love story; it is about romance, love and joy; I think all of these things are really universal issues that people are responding to. “
Netflix he tweeted a message of thanks to fans of the show on Wednesday, thanking them for making “Bridgerton” a success.
Regé-Jean Page, who plays The Duke of Hastings, also posted a photo with the entire cast and crew thanking the fans for their love and support.
Last week, Netflix announced that Bridgerton would return for a second season and will focus on Bridgerton’s eldest son, Anthony, played by Jonathan Bailey.
It is still unclear how many of the program’s season will be redistributed.
