The Balloons are usually the first big show of the Hollywood Awards season, which ends with the coronation of the best Oscar-winning film. They will maintain that distinction, even though they are almost two months behind, after the rise in virus cases in recent months has boosted the Grammy Awards in March.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association said Tuesday that the Globes (typically a boiling dinner with flowing drinks) will be held for the first time on the coast. Fey will host live from New York’s Rainbow Room and Poehler will host from the regular awards house, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and nominees from places around the world are expected to appear.
THIS IS AN UPDATE OF THE NEWS. The previous AP story follows below.
NEW YORK (AP): Whether someone will attend the O Globes in person remains uncertain and unlikely. However, nominations for the 78th Globe will be announced on Wednesday.
The strange and almost virtual Hollywood awards season it doesn’t have the usual kind of fashion and glamor of the red carpets that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association holds annually. More than perhaps any other award, the Balloons depend on a parade of stars, which will not materialize when the awards are handed out on Feb. 28 at a ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
On Tuesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said the Globes (typically a dinner with bubbles and fluent drinks) will be held for the first time on the coast for the first time.. Fey will host live from New York’s Rainbow Room and Poehler will host from the regular awards house, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and nominees from places around the world are expected to appear.
Nominations will be announced virtually at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday by presenters Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson. They will reveal 12 categories on NBC’s “Today” program, with full nominees announced live on E! digital channels and the Golden Globes website.
With no in-person projection or star-studded photo operations, little is known about how the nearly 90-member press association, a remarkably unpredictable group, in normal times, is collapsing this year. But one thing can be a blockchain: Netflix will get a lot of nominations.
Several of the streaming service’s films, including “Da 5 Bloods” by Spike Lee, “Mank” by David Fincher and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” by Aaron Sorkin, are considered the top spots, as well as the Netflix TV series “The Crown” and “Ozark.” At last year’s Globes, Netflix also led all studios with 34 nominations.
They are also expected to be nominated Wednesday for “Nomadland” by Chloe Zhao, starring Frances McDormand; Regina King’s directorial debut “A Night in Miami”; and George Wilson Wolfe’s August Wilson adaptation of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” starring Viola Davis and the late but almost assured Chadwick Boseman of the bosses.
The division of Globe nominees between drama and comedy / musical could also mean a wildcard of the season – “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” -. The film could be nominated for Best Feature Film, Comedy or Musical, along with acting gestures for Sacha Baron Cohen (also nominated for her supporting role in “The Trial of the Chicago 7”) and Maria Bakalova. Also noteworthy is the category: the film “Hamilton”, which is not eligible for the Oscars, is likely to be nominated for a Globe.
In the TV categories, expect “The Mandalorian,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Ted Lasso” and the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” to be in the mix.
In August, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Lorenzo Soria, died at the age of 68.. He was replaced by Ali Sar.
This year’s Globes were postponed for almost two months due to the pandemic and to accommodate the delayed Oscars. They are scheduled for April 25th. Last year’s Golden Globes culminated with awards for “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” The TV broadcast, hosted by Ricky Gervais, could not beat the general trend in award scores, with an average of 18.3 million viewers, 2% less than the previous year.
