Police said the minor fired “in self-defense” at the fleeing suspects. Officers found one of the suspects, 19-year-old Khalil Herring, at an intersection near Ellis’ home, who was suffering an apparent gunshot wound, according to the statement.
“Preliminary evidence suggests that Khalil Herring was one of the two masked intruders and was shot during the robbery,” police said.
Both Ellis and Herring were transferred to Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro for treatment. The herring was later pronounced dead. Ellis, the child’s grandmother, was treated for life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition, according to Goldsboro police.
When she arrived on CNN, a Goldsboro police spokeswoman would not provide any information about the second suspect in the attempted robbery.
Randolph Bunn, who said he was the minor’s great-uncle, told WTVD he was home when the intruders forced his way in and one of them was armed with a gun.
“(The intruder) just shot his grandmother … He would have shot her too, he would have shot me too, he would have killed us all,” Randolph Bunn told WTVD.
“Why would anyone come into your house and do it? You have to stop,” Coley said. “I don’t know what they think here in Goldsboro, but it has to stop.”
