Apple’s first 5G phones arrived a few months ago, but the company is already exploring the future of cellular connectivity.

A recently published job listing for a wireless search systems engineer sparked the company’s ambitions for 6G cellular technology. This listing, previously reported by Bloomberg, states that the position “will be at the heart of a cutting-edge research group responsible for creating next-generation disruptive radio access technologies over the next decade”

“You will work to define system level concepts, propose and research innovative ideas and algorithms, perform complex system simulations, define rapid prototyping platforms to help demonstrate your ideas, and specify RAN protocols and next generation cell systems (6G ) “, says the listing. Among the paper’s responsibilities, Apple says the position will participate in industry and academic forums “passionate about 6G technology.”

Apple did not immediately return any requests for feedback on its development of next-generation cellular technology.

Apple may be exploring the future of cellular connectivity, but we’re pretty much out of any technology that appears on Apple devices, potentially a decade or more, as 6G is little more than an idea right now. A new generation wireless connection the standard has not yet been set (and is likely to still be in years). Also, Apple has just introduced its first generation iPhone 5G at the end of last year. And as it moves away from its latest list of phones, many of its products remain 4G devices.

But that’s pretty clear in the job posting, which states that a good candidate can be someone who loves “working on challenges that no one has solved yet”. And technologies, clearly, that do not yet exist.
