2. Coronavirus
We are not out of the woods yet. Although new daily cases of Covid-19 in the United States have fallen since January, the number of cases last week still exceeded 50,000 daily. This puts the nation in a vulnerable position to experience another rise, says Dr. Anthony Fauci, which is precisely what is happening in Europe. The good news is that the U.S. population is getting vaccinated relatively quickly. The bad news is that highly contagious variants remain a threat. Until then, the United States should not ease restrictions until Covid-19 cases fall at least below 10,000 a day, Fauci said.
3. Elections of 2020
Officials have found a December recording of then-President Trump’s phone call to a Georgia investigator in a trash folder on his device. In the call, Trump encouraged the researcher to try to uncover “dishonesty” in absentee voting signatures in the state’s most populous county. The audio provides one more example of Trump’s efforts to push false claims of widespread election fraud and to influence Georgia’s election officials as they certified the results. Meanwhile, Republicans in several tipping states are claiming false allegations of fraud to advance measures that would make voting difficult. Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams called a similar effort in her state “a Jim Crow redux with dress and tie.”
4. Myanmar
Myanmar security forces killed dozens of protesters yesterday. It was one of the deadliest days since the military seized power in a coup, bringing the death toll after the coup to at least 126 people. The military junta also imposed martial law in six areas after several Chinese-funded factories were burned during the protests. It is unclear who is behind the fires. Protesters against the coup have been suspicious of China, with demonstrations targeting the Chinese embassy in Myanmar’s largest city, and protesters accuse Beijing of supporting the coup and the junta. China has not fully condemned the military takeover, but has backed a UN Security Council statement condemning the violence against peaceful protesters.
5. Sarah Everard
Women’s rights activists in the UK are outraged by how London metropolitan police on Saturday broke off a peaceful vigil for Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old girl who was murdered as she was heading home to the city this month. The fact that the man accused of murdering her is a member of the same police force only added fuel to the fire. The coincidence of Everard’s disappearance has led to a national calculation of women’s rights in the UK. Thousands of women have shared their own experiences of bullying or harassment while walking alone at night.
