The Amazon Fire TV update with a brand new home screen is now available

Amazon’s new Fire TV software

Amazon announced Thursday that its new Fire TV software update is being implemented on devices now. It has a completely redesigned home screen and functions as separate user profiles, so the recommendations on what to see are different for each person in your family.

The software was first announced in September and debuted on the Fire TV Stick Lite and third-generation Fire TV Stick in December, but now everyone owns Amazon’s Fire TV Cube (1st and 2nd generation) and the 3rd generation Fire TV, the Fire TV Stick 4K will be able to use the new features. Amazon says it will upgrade smart TVs and the second-generation Fire TV Stick later this year.

The new features may help it compete more aggressively against Roku, which still has a 50% market share of global connected television broadcasting hours with strong growth opportunities, according to a note from Deutsche Bank analyst in August.

Up to six people can create different profiles with the new software. So if you watch a lot of comedy shows, Amazon might recommend other comedies that you like. But if your spouse watches a lot of dramas, you’ll get recommendations for more content like this. Currently, with a unique profile, Amazon only recommends more based on what has been seen, regardless of who does the viewing.

Customization also extends to the home screen, where you can pin specific apps to the top for quick access. You may often use Netflix, YouTube TV, and Disney +, for example. You can put new smaller icons for those at the top. Below are recommendations on the things you look at through the services.

There’s also a new “Live” tab that shows you a channel guide, so it’s easier to get into live TV live if you pay for a streaming TV service like Sling or YouTube TV. Amazon told CNBC in September that it designed it to be a more familiar experience for people going from cable to streaming.

The update also includes deeper integration with Alexa’s voice assistant, so you can say “Alexa goes live TV” and will launch the live TV service you pay for.

Finally, there is a new “Search” section that makes content search easier. Show movies, pay-per-view TV shows, live TV, your watch list, and more.

You can update your Fire TV by opening Settings and selecting “My Fire TV” and then “About” and selecting “Check for System Update”.
