As my great-uncle often said, “To create art, you sometimes have to destroy an old unwanted upright piano.” He was a strange man.
In the latest Inside Infinite blog, 343 Industries shared lots of details and information on how to create sounds in the next Halo Infinite. There are a surprisingly large number of in-depth technology talks and diagrams which is in the message, if this is your kind of thing. But what I want to focus on is that, to help create loud, powerful sounds for the game, 343 fucked up a piano.
Fortunately, they also recorded and uploaded it to YouTube.
Oh yeah, I really meant that screwed up.
Not just a hammer tap or some hard shaking. They destroyed this thing, beating it with bricks, bats and chopping the wires. Eventually, they started throwing dry ice at it and the results are really creepy, alien noises. At one point, someone placed a block of dry ice on it and stomped hard, which made a strange noise, which was the intended effect. But it also felt like someone wanted to torture a piano and get lucky that day.
According to the blog posThis piano was donated by a friend of lead sound designer Kyle Fraser. The friend no longer wanted him and Fraser decided to use him to pick up a lot of noise and various pieces of audio.
I also think some people here just wanted to win the shit out of a piano with baseball bats. And who can blame them? Sounds funny.
