Star Trek Legends, recently publishedbut the Apple Arcade, plays a lot like Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, Disney’s Sorcerer’s Arena, DC Legends and countless others mobile turn-based role-playing games. But without energy meters or annoying microtransactions. As a result, feels like a game and not a treadmill designed to transport you to a store.
Star Trek Legends it involves a large cast of characters, both good and bad, of various Star Trek shows. How they are all together and fighting another? The Nexus, this great energy ribbon thing Generations, is back and Starfleet has a new special ship designed to get into it. It’s a bit weak and maneuverable to set up the game’s narrative, but it works.
And once you’re on the Nexus, interacting with other characters, the game takes full advantage of that setup. If you want Star Trek, which you probably do if you’re reading this far, there are a lot of jokes and references that will make you say “Oh yeah … I know”. None of the stories of Legends they are masterpieces, but they usually have some very well written pieces of dialogue with characters who interact with each other in fun and authentic ways.
The game mode is pretty standard for these types of games. You have a small team characters, each with their own abilities and skills. Take this team on missions, which consist of combat segments, short scenes, and even some moments where you have to decide what to do next. The combat is back, nothing incredibly fresh or new, but it works. Attack enemies, taking turns back and forth until a team is standing. Fortunately, you can speed up animations during combat. They seem nice, but in the end I just want to kill the bad guys and move on.

Which really elevates Star Trek Legends, the reason I’m writing this blog, is because the whole game is free of MTX or payout coins. There is no way to spend money on this game. There are no ads either. This is standard for Apple Arcade versions, but it really makes this type of game a lot more fun to play. I still play Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, but every month it seems like something new has been added that is designed to make me grind months or grab a bunch of cash. And with energy meters, it quickly becomes difficult to really play unless you pay money. The wait.
In Legends, however, you you can only … play the game. Unlocking characters is fun, not an expensive task. Completing the missions is exciting, not a hassle.
I can’t explain how weird enough it is, after years of playing these kind of mobile role-playing games, to be free to play it all I want. It is beautiful. In addition to the game is a beautiful celebration of Star Trek, both old and new. It’s a game built specifically for me. It makes me happy.
Yes, I know. It’s in Apple Arcade. And yes, I know that means you or some people you know can’t play it. What shit! I think Star Trek Legends it’s good enough that I’d love to see it warping to other platforms. But only if you avoid mobile RPG shit.
