WASHINGTON – A senior Republican senator said he and his colleagues could support a $ 800 billion infrastructure bill, underscoring the Republican Party’s interest in a bipartisan solution to the old roads and the nation’s broadband service.
Senator John Cornyn (R., Texas) comments Sunday indicate that Republican Senate is seeking a compromise on infrastructure, ahead of President Biden’s meeting with lawmakers Monday to push his own $ 2.3 trillion plan.
Republicans have generally expressed concern that Mr. Biden’s package is too expensive and has too much of what he considers to be no elements of infrastructure.
Asked on Fox News Sunday if he could support an $ 800 billion infrastructure package, Cornyn said: “There’s a basic infrastructure bill we could approve … So let’s do it and let’s go the rest for another day and another fight ”.
Sen. Chris Coons (D., Del.), Also on Fox News Sunday, said Democrats should work to find a bipartisan deal with Republicans on elements of the White House infrastructure plan before pivoting any to a second broader package that Democrats pass party lines.
