Shares of Globalstar, a satellite service provider, soared more than 50% on Monday after it reported that the next iPhone will have the ability to use satellite communications.
MFI-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TFI Securities, predicted in a note to investors on Sunday that Apple is “optimistic about the trend in satellite communications” and “likely” will include the ability to connect to extraterrestrial networks in the US. your next iPhone.
The new iPhone is expected to launch this fall. Apple has not yet announced any details about the device. The phone does not have an official name, but for now many refer to the iPhone 13.
Kuo said Globalstar is more likely to partner with Apple. The company has a network of 24 satellites in low Earth orbit.
“If Apple enables the relevant software features, iPhone 13 users can call and send satellite messages when they are not within 4G / 5G coverage,” Kuo wrote.
Globalstar did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Kuo’s note.
