September 4 (Reuters) – At least 17 people have been killed in celebratory shootings in Kabul, news agencies reported on Saturday after Taliban sources said their fighters had taken control of Panjshir, Afghanistan’s last province. who opposed the Islamist group.
Opposition leaders in the Taliban have denied that the province has fallen.
Shamshad news agency said the “airstrike” in Kabul on Friday killed 17 people and injured 41. The Tolo news agency gave a similar toll.
At least 14 people were injured in celebratory shootings in Nangarhar province, east of the capital, said Gulzada Sangar, a spokesman for a local hospital in the provincial capital Jalalabad.
The shootings sparked a reprimand from top Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
“Avoid shooting in the air and thank God,” Mujahid said in a message on Twitter. “Bullets can harm civilians, so don’t shoot unnecessarily.”
