A reality show starring celebrities? Now, where have we heard it before?
CBS’s new competition reality series, “The Activist,” is already getting a big reaction on social media even if it hasn’t been released.
According to Deadline, “‘ The Activist ’is a competition series featuring six aspiring team activists with three renowned public figures working together to bring significant change to one of the world’s three most important causes: health , education and the environment “.
Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Julianne Hough will co-host the series produced by Global Citizen.
Activists will compete in challenges to promote their causes and their success must be measured by participation in social media and the judgment of the hosts. There will be three teams whose main goal is to create effective moves that “amplify their message, drive action and advance them to the G20 Summit in Rome, Italy,” according to Deadline.
At the summit, they will talk to world leaders to help them raise funding and raise awareness about their causes.
The premise of the show has caused a massive amount of fire troll on Twitter by users who attacked the series. Actress Jameela Jamil wrote“Couldn’t they give the money it takes to pay for this INCREDIBLY expensive talent and do this show directly to activist causes? Instead of turning activism into a game and then giving a fraction of the much needed money into a ‘prize …?’ “People are dying.”
“I go to the activist reality show and I do this and everyone, including the judges, screams and cries,” one user wrote, alongside a meme from Kendall Jenner of her ill-fated Pepsi ad.
Added another user, “1. Why the hell do they judge him? 2. Why the hell is there a TV show that turns the activist into a competition when the whole essence of activism is solidarity and community? This is the absolute worst. “
“That’s really horrible, hehe. A competitive reality show about who can be the next instant activist? At best, it’s performative and makes hard work in the light very difficult. [organizations] do on the ground, daily. Dirty “ said one.
“Ooooh, I can’t wait for the cat fight and the activist-to-activist shadow! And the reunion show? Someone will serve you! ” joked a fan.
“The Activist” will premiere over five weeks on CBS starting Friday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m.
