Amazon will have to hire 3,000 corporate employees in Boston, to continue its expansion in the US

Amazon.com Inc. plans to add 3,000 employees to its corporate ranks in the Boston area, one of several technology job extensions in major U.S. cities for the company.

The online retailer said the jobs will be distributed among support teams, from Alexa’s smart speaker system to Amazon Web Services, Amazon Robotics and Amazon Pharmacy, a new business unit launched in November. Jobs will include roles in technology and software development.

Hiring plans in Boston add to one of several recent expansions by Amazon, which is the country’s second-largest employer, with a workforce in the U.S. of more than 800,000 people. Last year, the company experienced unprecedented growth, adding more than 400,000 employees and raising its global workforce to more than 1.1 million. The company has added thousands of jobs to corporate offices across America, including large centers like New York, San Diego and Dallas.

The company’s expansion into many U.S. cities comes nearly two years after its closely monitored plans to establish a portion of a second headquarters in New York collapsed after the reaction of some officials and activists local, state and Congress on the project, which included approximately $ 3 billion in tax incentives.

Amazon said it rented a 17-story office building in the Boston Seaport development to accommodate its growing staff in the city. The company said it will not receive any new financial incentive for the expansion.
