Lebron James of the Los Angeles Lakers
For much of this NBA season, LeBron James has been the clear deserving of winning the MVP. He has led the Los Angeles Lakers team to several victories without the presence of his teammate, superstar Anthony Davis. LeBron would have been the oldest player in league history to receive this award.
Unfortunately, he suffered an ankle sprain that has left him out for weeks. This absence has virtually wiped out any chance of LeBron winning the MVP. Although while he is most likely to be out of the race for this award, this fact does not stop people from continuing to debate the issue. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps were recently talking on the podcast The Hoop collective and the conversation between the two experts became quite heated when it came time to talk about LeBron.

The clip above is not the worst part of the discussion because then Bontemps marched head-on against Windhorst.

Bontemps and Windhorst are two respected NBA experts and it is rare for any of them to participate in this type of exchange. For some reason, LeBron’s theme sometimes upsets people.
Can LeBron return to the race for the MVP?
Although all indications are that LeBron no longer has any chance of winning the MVP after being injured, the door is not completely closed yet. James Harden, Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid have all been considered top contenders.
Harden is out due to injury and Embiid has just lost a lot of playing time. Jokic hasn’t been injured, but his game hasn’t been that solid lately. With Jamal Murray out the rest of the season, the superstar pivot has a great chance of becoming the favorite to receive the award.
The only way LeBron can be in the running again is if the Lakers fall into a bad streak and he returns soon. The team hasn’t been terribly bad without him, but he certainly won’t make it to the playoffs if he loses the entire season. At this point, LeBron is just a few games away from losing the race completely to the MVP.
At this point in his career, he is more concerned with winning championships. Based on how he has been challenging the passage of time, LeBron could be among the contenders for the coveted award once again next year.
When will LeBron play?
The Lakers finally received good news in a long time when Frank Vogel revealed that Anthony Davis will be back soon after a two-month absence. While this is certainly very good news for the team, there is still no precise date for LeBron’s return. Your return may depend on a number of factors.
If the team continues to win a decent amount of matches and are in the top six in the Western Conference, there is really no reason to make it play. He won’t win the MVP and has nothing to prove. It would be much smarter to let him rest as much as possible before the playoffs if they don’t need him on the court. If he feels better, he will surely return before the playoffs. You need a rehabilitation period. It is very feasible to see him return missing 10 games of the regular season. That would give him about two more weeks to recover.
