A new iMac is coming, and this time, rumors suggest that Apple is ready to resize the screenr at least release a larger version than the 27-inch screen we’re all used to.
Per MacRumors, credible leaker l0vetodream tweeted over the weekend: “The screen of the iMac is really big, bigger than the biggest.” That alone may not seem like anything, but it’s important to note that Apple hasn’t redesigned the iMac in nearly a decade. The last time we saw a design update was in 2012, of course updated components over the years, but otherwise, the iMac has stalled in the design department, especially when compared to Apple’s other products.
In January, Bloomberg reported that the new all-in-one iMac would likely take its design cues from Apple’s Pro Display XDR monitor. In terms of size, this would mean that we are looking for a possible 32-inch screen. While the 27-inch screen is considered the flagship, Apple also offers a smaller 21.5-inch version. Per Tom’s guide, this could also be increasing the size up to 24 inches.
Here are some important real estate screen updates. This is especially true if you consider that new iMacs are rumored to have thinner bezels. Apple is supposed to remove the horrible metal chin at the bottom of current iMacs, as well as shave its curved back into a flat one. The move looks similar to what Apple did with the iPhone ES and the iPhone 12 Mini. By lifting the home button and bezels, the iPhone Mini managed to increase the screen size to 6.7 inches compared to the small 4.7-inch screen of the SE.

Bloomberg quotes anonymous Apple sources as saying that the redesign of the iMac will be “one of the biggest visual upgrades of any Apple product this year.” And while a larger screen, almost no bevels, would be a noticeable change, it wouldn’t be everything which is different from the Pro Display XDR. Leaker Apple Jon Prosser insinuated by the end of February, the iMac would come in several colors: silver, space gray, green, sky blue and rose gold. No doubt this would count as a “great visual update,” and would be incredibly reminiscent of the colorful iMacs of yesteryear as they matched perfectly with the new colors of the iPhone 12. However, Prosser has a pretty satisfying track record with Apple rumors, so take it with a lot grain of salt.
What we do know is that the new iMacs will be the first to have Apple Silicon manufacturing the 2020 iMac the last to have an Intel chip. Apple began its move from Intel-enabled devices to its own ARM-based SoC, so it makes perfect sense for the iMac’s design to be revised now. A “big visual update” would help consumers easily differentiate upcoming iMacs as part of the Apple Silicon-powered era. This is bolstered by the fact that Apple has also been clearing its iMac inventory in recent weeks. La month, Apple the iMac Pro stopped working. A few weeks later set up two more settings of the 21.5-inch iMac.
Rumors led Apple to host a launch event in March and later revised to April. (Presumably, Apple he sowed these rumors to boot leakers.) There’s a small chance we’ll hear about the new iMacs, though Apple is more likely to launch a new iPad Pro and Air Tags. We’ll probably have to wait a few more months before we know what the new iMacs really look like, but it’s fair to say that big changes will come.
