“Avatar” is once again the highest grossing film of all time.

Over the weekend, the science fiction epic by James Cameron was re-released in China and earned enough in ticket sales to surpass “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Avatar” first became the world’s best-selling release of all time in 2010, when it usurped Cameron’s “Titanic”. In 2019, “Avengers: Endgame” won the title with a gross of $ 2.977 billion.

As of Saturday, “Avatar’s” gross revenue topped $ 2.802 billion, allowing it to regain its crown.

“These two movie titans have been dueling at the Olymp box office for years,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore. “As‘ Avatar ’once again takes center stage, the importance of the big screen experience, both in terms of its cultural impact and of course its huge revenue-generating power is concentrated in one approach. more intense “.

The directors of “Endgame”, Joe and Anthony Russo, went on social media to congratulate Cameron.

“Giving you back the glove,” they wrote in the message.

Originally part of the novelties approved by China Film Film in 2020, the 2009 science fiction epic remained around Disney during the ongoing pandemic.

While China has been able to regain some ticket sales in recent months, the launch of new box office features has slowed as a result of Chinese New Year celebrations. Adding “Avatar” to your cinemas is a way to generate support and give operators a much-needed boost at a time when no new movies are being released.

“We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are thrilled that the film is returning to cinemas during these unprecedented times and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support,” said producer Jon Landau. “We are working hard on the upcoming Avatar movies and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story over the next few years.”

The first new film in the Avatar franchise will be released in 2022. It will be one of five to come in the next decade. Disney only recently acquired “Avatar,” although the film already had a license to build a plot at Florida’s Animal Kingdom theme park.

In 2019, Disney finalized its deal to acquire 20th Century Fox’s entertainment assets, including James Cameron’s “Avatar”.

As it stands, Disney owns the five highest-grossing films of all time and eight of the top ten. In particular, “Titanic,” which currently ranks third, was a joint production between Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox. The other films are “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, the live action remake of “The King Lion”, “Avengers” and “Frozen II”.
