‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler will develop a new Wakanda series for Disney +

Walt Disney Co. announced Monday a five-year exclusive television deal with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler that will include a Wakanda series to air at Disney +.

“Ryan Coogler is a unique narrator, whose vision and range have made him one of the most prominent filmmakers of his generation,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement. “With ‘Black Panther’, Ryan brought an innovative story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a cutting-edge cultural moment. We are thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more fantastic stories with Ryan and his team.

Coogler is currently working on a sequel film “Black Panther” for Disney DIS,
+ 1.66%,
despite the death last year of star Chadwick Boseman. In addition to the Wakanda series, as part of the five-year contract, Coogler producer Proximity Media will be able to develop series for other Disney divisions.

Wakanda, of course, is the fictional African kingdom that hosts the superhero Black Panther. The 2018 film grossed $ 1.3 billion worldwide.

In December, Disney + announced an ambitious list of streaming series in the coming years, including at least 10 Marvel shows. It was unclear when the Wakanda series could debut.
