FRISCO – The city of Colorado, Breckenridge, canceled the New Year’s Eve fireworks castle over environmental issues, officials said.
The decision was a continuation of the city’s decision earlier this year to celebrate the holidays in ways with less environmental impact, Summit Daily reports.
The city canceled the fireworks castle on July 4, 2020, which officials said was the result of fire safety concerns and possible negative effects on the forest and wildlife.
The council chose to stay consistent with the cancellation of the summer holidays, Breckenridge spokeswoman Haley Littleton said.
“Because of this summer decision, the council decided they also didn’t want to have fireworks in the winter to provide consistency and continue without disturbing our wildlife,” Littleton wrote in an email.
“The city of Breckenridge believes there are better options for celebrating these holidays that have the least environmental impact,” Littleton wrote.
Breckenridge Ski Resort has not changed plans to host the annual New Year’s Eve torch parade, in which ski and snowboard instructors carry torches and travel from the top of a from the tops of the mountain to the village of the station.
