Britney Spears’ father calls for end to legal guardianship

Britney Spears’ father filed a petition Tuesday to end the curatorship that has controlled the singer’s life and money for 13 years.

James Spears filed the application in Los Angeles Superior Court.

“As Mr. Spears has said over and over again, all he wants is the best for his daughter,” the document notes. “If Miss Spears wants to end guardianship and believes she can take charge of her own life, Mr. Spears believes she should have that opportunity,” he adds.

Judge Brenda Penny, who is in charge of the case, must approve the action.

At the moment there was no response to an email sent to the singer’s lawyer seeking comment.

James Spears had been the target of much of the annoyance surrounding the curatorship, both on the part of his daughter and the public.

A request from Britney Spears’ attorney to withdraw custody of the father was to be heard at the next case hearing scheduled for Sept. 29.

James Spears noted in an August 12 letter that he planned to resign as the curator of his finances, but did not offer a timetable. He ceded control over the singer’s life decisions in 2019, maintaining only the oversight of her money.

He has repeatedly pointed out that there is no justification for his dismissal and that all his actions have been thinking about his daughter’s well-being.

Guardianship was established in 2008, when Britney Spears began to have very public mental problems, at a time when the media was obsessed with every moment of her life, hordes of paparazzi aggressively followed her everywhere and he lost custody of his children.
