Capitoline police recommend disciplinary action for 6 officers following internal investigation into January 6 riot

Six officers have been recommended for disciplinary action for their actions during the January 6 attack, U.S. Capitol police said Saturday. The announcement came as an update to the police department’s internal investigation into the event.

“The USCP Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) initiated 38 internal investigations,” police said in a statement. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not find sufficient evidence to indicate that any of the officers committed a crime.”

Of the 38 officers, 26 were successfully identified by officials. The other 12 could not be identified due to the lack of specific information on the complaints, the department said.

A total of six officers were recommended for disciplinary action: three for inappropriate conduct, one for non-compliance with directives, one for inappropriate comments and one for incorrect dissemination of information, the department said.

The specific disciplinary measures that officers are expected to face were not made public.

“Yet another case is pending over an official who is accused of unsatisfactory performance and inappropriate conduct,” the department said. “The administrative investigation was initiated after a criminal investigation, in which no charges were filed.”

In 20 of the cases, no fault was found, USCP said.

“The Department is committed to accountability when agents violate the standards governed by USCP policies and the expectations of the Congressional community,” the department said. “The six sustained cases should not diminish the heroic efforts of U.S. Capitol police officers. On January 6, the courage and courage displayed by the vast majority of our employees was inspiring.

In February, the department announced it had suspended six paid officers as he continued to investigate his conduct on the day of the riot.

The attack on the United States Capitol has led to more arrests 580 people. At least 83 of the defendants have links to extremist groups, including the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and Three Percenters. Five people died on January 6 and several police officers have died in the following months.

USCP is currently preparing for another rally at the United States Capitol scheduled for September 18th. Far-right groups, including the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, plan to demand “justice” for the hundreds of people who have been charged with their alleged roles in the Jan. 6 riot, according to two well-known new intelligence sources.
