Congress Librarian Carla Hayden announced the annual selection of 25 films on Monday.

The films were selected because of their “cultural, historical or aesthetic significance to the country’s film heritage”, and this year’s titles include blockbusters, music, silent films, documentaries and a variety of screen-adapted stories from books.
This year’s selections include the number of recorded films directed by women and color filmmakers, nine directed by women and seven directed by people of color.

“The National Film Record is an important record of American history, culture and creativity, captured in our cinematic experience as one of the finest American art forms,” Hayden said in a statement. “By adding different filmmakers, we are not trying to set records, but rather to set the record straight by highlighting the amazing contributions that women and people of color have made to American cinema.
2020 brings the number of images selected for preservation in the panel register to 800.
