Dozens arrested in New York as police and protesters clash in front of City Hall Park

Police and Black Lives Matter protesters clashed Monday night in front of City Hall Park, causing dozens of arrests and several injured officers, authorities said.

The confrontation began around 8:30 p.m. after hundreds of protesters who had originally gathered in front of the Barclays Center marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in a rally in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Once they arrived in Manhattan, they encountered a strong police presence and chaos ensued, and images were viewed online.

Ten police officers were wounded in the melee, sources said, and a captain was hit in the helmet with a bottle.

Police sources said a protester, who was arrested, turned a stick against an officer.

In a video posted to Twitter, police can be seen charging and pushing several protesters and fighting another person on the ground on the street.

Officers can be heard in an online video ordering protesters to back up the sidewalk.

“Fk you,” you can hear some of the crowd shouting at the police. According to the video, other people say, “Do you want to find animals”?

At least 29 arrests occurred near Chambers and Center streets, and many were accused of blocking traffic, according to sources.
