Russia has not ruled out the idea of President Vladimir Putin talking to Tesla billionaire Elon Musk on the social networking Clubhouse app, according to several media reports.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday that the proposal was “interesting,” but that more details were needed, according to Tass news agency. The news was also reported by Reuters and the Russian media RBC.
“First we want to find out, you know that President Putin does not use social media directly, he personally does not make them work,” Peskov said, according to the translations.
“Overall, this is a very interesting proposal, but first you have to understand what is meant, what is proposed.”
The Kremlin did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
On Saturday, Musk invited Putin via Twitter to join him in a conversation at Clubhouse, which is a fast-growing audio-only app after gaining popularity in Silicon Valley.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX then said in Russian, “It would be a great honor to speak with you.”
Clubhouse has been downloaded approximately five million times, according to App Annie, the app tracker. Like other U.S. social media platforms, it crashed in China last week.
The invitation-only iPhone app allows people to have conversations “on stage” while an audience listens. Members of the audience can be invited “on stage” to ask questions to the speakers.
Musk interviewed Robinhood co-founder Vlad Tenev at Clubhouse on Jan. 30, and last Wednesday the businessman wrote on Twitter that he agreed to “do Clubhouse” with Kanye West.
Last month, Clubhouse was valued by investors at about $ 1 billion. Twitter has released its own version, known as Spaces, while Facebook appears to be working on a similar product.
