Microsoft’s magnificent British campaign runner Forza Horizon 4 arrives on Steam on March 9, the company announced today. These are the latest developments in a long line of Microsoft games coming to rival platforms and the first time that Power the game has never appeared in the Valve showcase.
The Steam version of Forza Horizon 4 will have cross-play with all other versions, including the console and smartphones via xCloud streaming. It will also continue to be updated as the console version, starting with a Hot Wheels Legends car package that will arrive in the near future.
Forza Horizon 4 has received a lot of updates since it was originally available on Xbox One and PC through the Microsoft Store, including the dull but scenic expansion of Fortune Island in 2018 and Lego expansion smashing bricks in 2019. Forza Horizon 4 even Playground Games makers were added a battle royale mode at any given time.
Microsoft has recently brought many of its games to Steam, including Gears 5, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sea of thieves, And others. Although these games were already available on the computer through the Microsoft Store, versions of Steam have led to additional sales and, most importantly, a new source of new players. Microsoft announced last year that Sea of thieves sold a million more copies in its first few weeks after reaching the Valve platform.
It is not clear where this leaves the rest of Power series. 2017 more focused on sim racer Forza Motorsport 7 it’s not on Steam yet and it’s unclear if the follow-up, currently titled Forza Motorsport, will also be available. The game was revealed in last summer’s Xbox Series X showcase, although it does not yet have a release date.

Updated: 2:08 PM ET, 2/8/21: In a follow-up statement to Kotaku, Microsoft confirmed that Forza Horizon 4 does not support cross-progression and that saved data from the existing version of the game will not pass to the Steam version:
‘Forza Horizon 4 ‘ on Steam it is considered a standalone purchase outside of the Xbox ecosystem, although cross-gaming is enabled to make online players share sessions automatically across platforms. Saving files and the overall progression on Steam is completely unique and separate from any pre-existing save file associated with a player’s Xbox Live game brand. However, two exceptions that will be streamed from Xbox to Steam are ratings and clubs, which are one per gamertag.
